A large extension and refurbishment in Perth’s southern suburb of Coolbellup. With the majority of the homes being demolished and subdivided for units and townhouses in this suburb due to rezoning the owners were stuck with a dilemma of upgrading the existing family home or demolishing and subdividing themselves. With family, play, adventure and friends at the heart of the owner’s core values the simple solution to stay and rejuvenate the existing dilapidated home was decided and a process of value engineering began. 

In collaboration with K5B Developments, Darklight undertook a design process of rejuvenating an existing small house into a large family home to cater for the needs of the growing family. A process to maximise the budget was to keep the clients living at the house during the entire build and demolition stages. With builder input a design was formatted to allow the clients to move from one finished area to the other and reduce impact on the client and builder during the 9 month build process. 

The new design incorporated a new master suite, parents retreat, family living, study and double garage to the front of the house. Existing bedrooms and utility areas where then remodelled to create a greater space for the client’s children. The existing tiled roof was removed for new colorbond roof and the existing bricks were rendered. Light weight framing, alternative weatherboard claddings and foam cladding with acrylic render were used to speed the process and build times. 

The new home presents a simple and fresh coastal look blending in the existing home where it is not recognisable from the street. A large street wall and automated vehicle gate is integrated into the front façade creating a secure access point and noise buffer from the busy street.
