A skinny lot in Karrinyup with difficult solar access due to the lot orientation created a design methodology of creating courtyards and extruded a long house design. To gain access of early morning sun and northern aspects the design focused on pockets of light through the courtyard space and allocating that ambient light took precedence over direct natural sun light to create a feeling of space and large open spaces not common in small lot designs. Large sections of glazing were used and directed to be always looking internally at landscaped areas so that where possible the notion of small lot living was removed. The street presence was an important factor and with limited width a very structured but layered approach was taken with all white finishes. Textures and alternative materials provide the home depth and the contrast is balanced with significant shadow lines and movement as the sun moves. Green landscaping and vertical green spaces provide the final balance to the all white façade.
